When thinking about innovation in health care, the immediate thought is about new technologies such as medicines, diagnostics, and new frontiers in microbiology. These provide wonderful new ways to improve health outcomes at a time when demographics, disease dynamics, and other factors are stressing health care systems globally. Yet they also often generate higher spending.
Managing the challenge of promoting access to innovative services in a fiscally responsible way involves strategic thinking about how resources can be combined in novel ways to deliver better care: it is about thinking differently and smarter, not just faster and with a focus on cost cutting.
This module has been developed to provide understanding healthcare spending trends and ways to address those trends. The curriculum focuses on critical strategies such as benefit design and PAYMENT POLICY. It will include discussion of value in health care and tools to identify low value services.

The healthcare industry is becoming progressively challenging with advances in technology and medicine. There is a continuous pressure for zero sum error while expectations with respect to reducing the delay time and providing prompt patient care are increasingly surmounting. The origin of quality assurance initiatives in the healthcare industry extends back to the work of Florence Nightangle during the Crimean War (1854-1856). During this period the introduction of nutrition, sanitation and infection control initiatives in war hospitals contributed to reduction in the death rate from 43% to 10%. Similarly, today TQM can play an important part in establishing healthcare organizations competitive strategy; thus improving customer satisfaction and offering higher prospects for great market share and profitability. Today's healthcare organizations are undergoing a rapid transformation phase.
